There are beautiful lane houses in downtown Shanghai. General speaking: you can find 4 types of lane houses;

Shikumen Lane house( lilong): Shi ku men means stone frame door. This was a unique housing type created by foreigners in Shanghai for wealthy Chinese refugees fleeing civil unrest outside the city and seeking protection within the foreign concession. It’s a combination of Chinese courtyard-style dwelling and British terraced housing. The dwellings are two storey, of brick construction and have a very private interior courtyard. They have few utilities. A good place to see what a shikumeng was like is the Shikumeng Museun in Xintiandi.

Garden Lane house(lilong): As land values and the Shanghai population grew, the lilong housing type became taller and narrower. The enclosed courtyard of the shikumeng gave way to a less private, and still small, south-gated garden courtyard. These lane houses usually have three storeys and more utilities. They often have shops around the perimerter on the outside.

Apartment  lane house(lilong): more modern construction methods and the need for higher housing densities led to the design of lilong made up of blocks of apartments. These are usually between three and five storeys hign and south-facing, often with a common garden area between the buildings (rather than a private courtyard of garden).

Villa lane house(lilong): These lanes have rows of attached or detached villas, between two and four stroeys high, usually all in the same style; each normally has a f private south-faciing garden.
