Lane house or modern apartments(part 1)

One frequent question People ask me about is that- should I choose to live in a lane house or a modern apartment. I think that is a very good question for a new comer. To answer the question, I think what you need to figure out first is where to live Shanghai, should I live in downtown or should I live in suburb? Secondly, you need to find out what your needs are.

Are you coming to Shanghai along or with your boyfriend/ girlfriend? Or are you coming with your family, your husband/ wife / kids? What is the priority when it comes to housing search? Is it that to find a place nearby your workplace or to close to the city’s finest facilities? My advice is if you are single or with your partner, it is the best to choose a place with access to everywhere.

Location does matter. The best areas in downtown are the Former French concession, Xintiandi and Jingan area where you will find the city’s best restaurants, cafes, bars, galleries, theaters, nightlife, and entertainment…..Everything you can see in other part of the world, you can see it here. Of course some people would say it is far from my office. I would like to say Shanghai has one of the most convenient public transportation. With the opening of Metro line9 , 10 and 12, plus the original Line1 and Line2, in the French concession, Xintiandi and Jingan area, a 15-minute walk you can reach to any subway stations. Besides, some expats only come to here for 1 to 2 years, why not make the most of it?

However, if you are coming with your family ( husband or wife , kids), you can look at Hongqiao or Pudong where you can find villas or apartments. The streets there are wider. Compounds are more kids friendly. Some houses come with a big garden. More importantly the international schools are there. And you can always find a 3-stories lane house here in downtown with the similar price range, make sure you look at the both options see which is more suitable.
