Lane house another word (Lilong): Li means neighbourhood and long means lane. So a Lilong is a gated lane neighborhood with a hierarchy of lanes and buildings, often with south-facing courtyards or gardens, also known as longtangs. The buildings in a lilong are usually designed in same style.

Lane house is the most typical Shanghainess architectural forms, which until the latest building boom began 20 years ago, was common throughout the city. Lane neighborhoods typically covers a city block, and have a few entrances from the streets that can be locked by iron gates.

Within the neighborhood, lanes are arrayed in a regular matrix pattern, the stone framed doors (shikumeng ) facing south.

A lane house doorway-called shikumeng-is formed by three pieces of solid stone with rounded upper joints and an inward-opening wooden doors leading to a courtyard.
