Lane houses and community life are becoming a thing of the past as Shanghai morphs into a modern city of glass and steel.

Over 70 percent of Shanghai residents were born and raised in Longtong( or lane) neighbourhoods, but these communities are now endangered by progress. The Longtang, Shanghais vernacular domestic architecture, is more than just a building style: it’s a way of life. These attached dwellings- each with its shikumeng (stong-gate) entrance- separated by lanes and surrounded by an exterior wall, are thriving hubs of community life.

As more and more Shanghaines move out to modern apartments and lane houses fall to wrecking ball, Shanghai stands to lose far more than a piece of its architecture- its losing part of its culture.

However, people are recognizing the value of the lane culture, as you can find more and mord beautiful homes in those lane houses, mostly newly refurbished in a stylish and tasty way in Former French concession, Jingan and Xintiandi area.
