Art deco building

Art deco : the streamlined, elegant look, born at the Expr in Paris in 1925, was a metaphor for the new age of skyscrapers, steamships, trains and all things modern. Progressive Shanghai embraced it eagerly, but made it her owning by adding Chinese elements to Art deco, and Art deco elements to Chinese styles.

Art deco defines Shanghai skyline between the late 1920s and late 1940s; the Park hotel (the tallest building of its day), the Grosvenor house and –most famous of all- the iconic Peace hotel. Even traditional lane houses were modernized with the addition of Art deco exterior details. So completely did Shanghai embrace this style that it permeated virtually all designs: furniture, graphic art, even fabric. And so completely did Art deco become associated with Shanghai that, even today, contemporary architects wanting to add a bit of Shanghai style to their skyscrapers invariably use Art deco features.
